Learn how Linky, the BuddiesHR org chart app for Slack, works, from charts, placed and excluded people to profiles and who can change what.

SlackUpdated Oct 8, 20262 min read

Linky, the BuddiesHR org chart app for Slack, builds your org chart from your Slack members. Admins decide who reports to whom and which fields each profile has, and everyone can browse the chart, keep their own profile up to date and look people up from Slack with /whois.

Where things happen#

Where What you do there
Web dashboard (dashboard.buddieshr.com) Build and edit the chart, browse it, edit profiles, change settings
Slack, Linky's Home tab See your profile, open the chart, see the chart's status (admins)
Slack, /whois Look up anyone's profile from any conversation
Slack, direct messages Team change notifications, profile reminders

Charts and the people on them#

  • Chart: your org chart starts as a single chart named "Company". You can add more, for example one per country or entity. See create and manage several charts.
  • Placed people: a person appears on a chart once an admin gives them a manager, or marks them as having No manager (they then sit at the top).
  • Excluded people: people an admin left out of the chart on purpose. They aren't asked to fill in their profile and don't count as seats.
  • External people: people added by hand who aren't in Slack, such as contractors. See add someone who's not in Slack.

New Slack members are never added to the chart on their own. Admins can get notified when the team changes and place them.

Who can do what#
