How to set up a peer-to-peer kudos program in Slack

Launch a peer-to-peer kudos program in Slack with Clappy in five steps: install, set claps and values, add a reward, give the first clap, track it.

To set up a peer-to-peer kudos program in Slack, install Clappy, the BuddiesHR kudos app, choose a public kudos channel, give everyone a weekly budget of claps and add at least one reward. Anyone can then thank a coworker publicly, not just managers, and tie each kudos to a company value.

Step 1: Install Clappy#

Follow Install Clappy in Slack. It takes about 30 seconds.

Step 2: Set the basics in one minute#

Right after the install, the quick setup page of the BuddiesHR web dashboard walks you through:

  • A public kudos channel, where everyone sees the recognition.
  • Claps per week for each person. We recommend 5: enough to recognize people all week, without overthinking it. Unused claps don't carry over.
  • Your company values, so each kudos can highlight one of them.
  • Appreciation Day and the leaderboard, to keep the habit going: a weekly day of kudos in your channel, and a ranking everyone can see on Clappy's Home tab.

Step 3: Add at least one reward#

Programs with at least one reward get noticeably more engagement, and even a simple one like a $10 gift card makes a difference. People redeem the claps they've received for the rewards you set up.

Step 4: Give the first clap yourself#

Show the way: type /clap in Slack, pick a coworker, attach a value and say thanks. See give your first clap.

Step 5: Watch the culture grow#

Clappy admins can follow who is recognized and which values come up most in the insights dashboard, on the admin side of the web dashboard, and export every recognition to Excel.
